Gateway to the world heritage sites of
Ajanta and Ellora, Aurangabad is the city built by the Mughal Emperor
Aurangzeb. It is the city that carries a tinge of Arabian aura. Aurangabad
enjoys great historical significance due to its location on the famous Silk
Route. It is the land that was inhabited by several royal dynasties , whose
contributions made it a centre of culture and learning. It ia fairly a clean
city and even its people are very courteous and polite.
Come and witness the crowning glory of Aurangabad.....
See & Do
Aurangabad has rich and varied history
that can be witnessed in the world heritage sites of Ajanta and Ellora caves
and Bibi Ka Maqbara.
Ajanta Caves - The 30 rock cut caves of Ajanta lie in an
inner fold of the Sahyadri Hills, 100 kms away from Aurangabad. The Ajanta
Caves are a World Heritage site cut from the volcanic lava of the Deccan in
the forest ravines of the Sahyadri Hills. The natural gallery of the caves
houses India's most sophisticated ancient paintings or frescoes of many
colours.
Ellora Caves - The rock cut cave temples of Ellora depict
the Hindu,Buddhist and Jain faiths and were constructed between 5th and 8th
centuries A.D. The Ellora caves have been declared a World Heritage Site.
Bibi Ka Maqbara -
The Bibi Ka Maqbara was built by Prince Azam Shah in memory of his mother
and Aurangzeb's wife, Begum Rabia Daurani. Its architecture somehow
resembles the Taj Mahal. The entrance to the tomb has an enormous brass
inlaid door with an inscription around its edges naming the maker. The
maqbara looks quiet impressive in its structure.
Paan Chakki - Located next to the Ghati Government
Hospital near the central bus stand, this water-driven mill was built in
1695 for Baba Shah Musafir, Aurangzeb's favourite saint.
The Aurangabad Caves - The Aurangabad caves are not that
spectacular as the Ajanta and Ellora caves but they introduce us to the
classic rock cut architecture. The caves date back to the Vakatakas and the
succeeding Kalachuri dynasties. The location of the caves is tranquil and
provides a great city view.
Purwar Museum - The fascinating personal collection put
on display since 1970 by Dr Shantilal Purwar includes, a 500- year old chain
mail suit, an 800- year old Paithani sari and a copy of a Koran which is
hand-written by Aurangzeb.
Shopaholics
Wherever we go, the exciting activity of shopping is
always on our cards. And the city of Aurangabad is no exception. Aurangabad
has a legacy of superb handicrafts and is famous for its brocades. The woven
Himro shawls, Mashru and Kimkhab weaves are the main sources of attraction
and continue to cast their spell on the visitors. At the entrance of Ajanta
and Ellora one can buy pretty agates and other crystals. There is bidriware,
smooth dark brass work with intricate designs inlaid on its glossy surface
which reached its culmination under the Mughals.
The State Weaving Centre at Paithan offers some exquisite and expensive
Pithani sarees with intricate zari borders and some very beautiful Paithani
wall pieces.
