Spawned in 1849, Dhramshala stands at the foot of Dhauladhar in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh and is commonly referred to as the " Queen Of Hills". It provides a magnificent view of the snowy peaks, deodar and pine forests, tea gardens and beautiful hills. It has become one of the ace tourist spots in Himachal Pradesh. The beauty, serenity and calmness of the place cannot be matched with any other hill station of India. These days this place has turned out to be the hot seat of his Holiness, Dalia Lama.

Dharamshala has a number of famous places to visit. Traveller's travel mood will find new heights and every season and every spot has its own offerings here.

Mcleod Ganj - Mcleod Ganj has become one of major Buddhist centres with the arrival of the Tibetan Spiritual leader, Dalai Lama. This mid 19th century place was developed as a British Garrison and today has developed as the headquarters of the exiled Tibetan Government.

War Memorial - This memorial is situated near the entry point to Dharamshala and has been built in the memory of those who fought bravely for the honour and defence of the motherland. There is also a cafe just close to War Memorial serving fast food and beverages.

Dall Lake - Surrounded by high and green Deodar trees is the lake, which fills a mountain bowl. Situated 11-kms away from the town, this lake is easily approachable by road and makes an enchanting and serene picnic spot.

St. John's Church - One of the most poignant memories of the British Raj is the church of St. John, situated in the wilderness. This charmingly dressed stone church is located just 8-km from Dharamsala on the way to McLeod Ganj. Under the shade of Doedar branches, a memorial has been made over the body of the British Viceroy, Lord Elgin who died at Dharamsala in 1863.

Kangra Art Museum - This treasure trove of the Kangra valley's arts, crafts, and rich past, displays artifacts that date back to the 5th century. The museum also includes a gallery of Kangra's famous miniature paintings and a representative collection of sculptures, pottery, and anthropological items.

Adventure Hour

For all the adventure enthusiasts interested in trekking and rock climbing, Dharamshala is the best spot. There are tailor-made treks in the Kangra valley around Dharamsala and adjoining places. The trekking season starts from May and goes on to October.

The area is rich in small rivers and streams, which give ample opportunity for angle fishing. The 20-km stretch of the river Beas between Nadaun and the Pong Dam offers ample of opportunities in angling for Mahaseer.

Discerning Shopper

Shopping has become a routinal activity for many of us today. Every day a need takes birth and we struggle hard to fulfill the same by hook or by crook. The popular items for shopping in Dharamsala are: wooden carvings, silk and woven woolen scarves and Tibetan handicrafts. Exquisite handicrafts fashioned out of wood, bamboo and cane would certainly arrest your attention.

Shopping Junctions-
Kotwali Bazaar - It is the general bazaar of Dharamshala.
Jogibara Road - It is one of the important shopping centres of Dharamshala
Mcleod Ganj - The Tibetan's market here masters in selling a tradition of handicrafts , which are available in profusion.
There are also many street side stalls erected by the local people of Dharamshala.

Eater's Wannabe

McLeod Ganj is a great place for eating, and the town has an abundance of restaurants, especially in the mid to upper range that cater to foreign tourists.
- Snow Lion Restaurant. Near the main bus stand. This is a popular place for both Tibetans and Tourists alike.
- Malabar Restarant. Also near the bus stand. The best Indian food in McLeod Ganj.
- Moon Peak Coffee. The best coffee in town, located on Temple road half way to the Dalai Lama's
main temple. The owners also run a photo lab next door by the same name. Sit and have a coffee while waiting for your photos to print.
- Om Hotel. Right near the main bus square in Mcleod Ganj, this family run restaurant/hotel has great Tibetan food, and is very cheap. Great view and atmosphere as well!
- Rewa Cafe. Down the hill on Jogiwara Road, five minutes past the post office. Best Tibetan food in town.
- Momo Cafe. Best momos in town. The chai is also particularly good.
- JJI's Cafe. Delicious Special Muesli. Sometimes they play Bob Dylan.
- Nick's Italian Kitchen. Great Italian food at cheap prices. Very popular.
- Lung-Ta. Japanese food. Non-profit, proceeds go towards helping to free political prisoners.
- Taste of India. Best Indian food in town. The owner runs 3 day Indian cooking courses from the restaurant. She also owns a south Indian restaurant on the Bagsu Road (one of the last shops in Mcleod on the way to Bagsu) which serves simple but very tasty southern dishes.

Dharamsala is a good place to try Tibetan food
» momos (dumplings filled with meat or vegetables)
» thugpa (noodle soup)
» yak butter tea (salty tea churned with butter, not as good as the real stuff though)

The Changing Wind

Dharamshala is located in the Himalayas therefore the climate is very pleasant here especially during summers. However the winters here are extremely cold. Temperature can drop below the freezing point during the winters and heavy woollen clothes are required. During the summers the weather is mild and light woolens and cottons are recommended.
