Sa La Peak and Sa La Lake - Sa La Peak is a dramatic high
mountain pass- at 13,714 ft this is the world's third highest. One stops to
capture the great vistas of the Se La Peak and Se La Lake and to take a deep
lung - fulls of invigorating mountain air.
Tawang Monastery - This 400 years old fortified monastery of Tawang,
named as Galden Namgyal Lhatse was visited by the current Dalai Lama on his
flight from Tibet in the early 1960's. The focal point of attention in this
highly important Mahayana monastery in Asia is the 26 ft high gilded Buddha
tended by about 500 maroon -robed resident monks.
Pakang Teng Tso Lake - This spectacular Pakang Teng Tso Lake is just
a glimpse in to the huge treasure of natural wonders that are secreted
amongst its forested expanses. This pristine blue lake has only the
occasional tourist for company.
Local Sports
A tourist visiting here can enjoy the local sports of
the place like: archery, wrestling, shot put, discuss throw and new games
such as Lai and Thipi.
Go Shopping
Tawang boasts of its great variety of handicrafts. The
Monpas are highly skilled in weaving and make some of the most brilliant
carpets and shawls in the North East. The Apatanis too are known for their
weaving and their shawls and jackets make great souvenirs to take home. They
also make handmade paper from the bark of the Daphne Botanica plant found in
their jungles. Tangkha paintings, a beautiful religious art form whose
primary subject is the Buddha, also make for lovely mementos for friends and
family. Colourful utility items like cups, dishes and fruit bowls scooped
out of local Monpa wood. Sherdukpen shawls, Apatani Jackets and scarves Adi
skirts, Mishmi shawls, Wancho bags Baskets and masks made of bamboo and cane
Ornaments and bangles made of beads.
