Situated on the banks of the
Brahmaputra river in Assam, Kaziranga is one of the famous wildlife parks in
the world. It is a stronghold of some of the most magnificent creatures.
Flanked all along by tea estates, Kaziranga is an island of wilderness and a
safe abode for animals. It was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1940 and
is one of the last refuges of the Indian rhino. The park divided into
central, eastern and western sectors consists of semi- evergreen forested
highlands, rivulets, marshes and extensive plains covered with tall elephant
grass up to 6 metres high.

large population of Indian Elephants, Indian Bison, Swamp Deer or
Barasingha, Hog Deer, Sloth Bears, Tigers , Leopard Cats, Jungle Cats,
Otters, Hog Badgers, Capped Langurs, Hoolock Gibbons,Wild Boar, Jackal, Wild
Buffalo, Pythons, Monitor, Lizards etc.
A lesser known fact about Kaziranga National Park is that it also is a bird
watcher's paradise. It is second to the Corbett National Park with great
diversity of bird population that is found here. These include the Oriental
Honey Buzzard, Black-Shouldered Kite, Black Kite, Brahminy Kite, Pallas's
Fishing Eagle, White Tailed Eagle, Grey-Headed Fishing Eagle, Himalayan
Griffon, etc. Huge numbers of migratory birds descend on the parks lakes and
marshy areas during winters, including Greylag Geese, Bar-Headed Geese,
Ruddy Shelduck, Gadwall, Falcated Duck, Red-Crested Pochard and Northern
Shoveller.
Year Of Kudos
The Khaziranga is much more than a National Park and
was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985. It is thronged by a
great number of tourists every year.

- Kaziranga is internationally acknowledged for its importance as one
of the last undisturbed habitats of the great Indian one-horned
rhinoceros.
- There are over 1500 rhinos in Khaziranga. This UNESCO World Heritage
Site turned 100 in 2005.
