History
Rev. Astly Cooper of England was one, who fathered the concept of
Commonwealth Games. In 1891, he suggested a "Pan-Britannic-Pan Anglican
Contest and Festival, to be held every four years as a means of giving a
boost up to the goodwill and good understanding of the overall English
empire.
The conduction of the first recorded Games between Empire athletes
coincided with the celebrations of coronation of His majesty King George the
fifth in 1911 and was known as the "Festival of the Empire".
The program, Festival of Empire consisted of track and field athletics,
boxing, wrestling and swimming events. A trophy of a silver cup was given to
the winning country, Canada. The hard work of a Canadian named M.M Robinson
led to the organization of the first Commonwealth Games in 1930. The event
proved to be a massive hit. Therefore a decision of making them regular was
soon taken in to consideration.
